Community Public Relations Coordinator

The Public Relations Coordinator plays a critical role in promoting Special Olympics programs within the community. This position ensures that the public, media, and all interested parties are informed about the activities and events organized by Special Olympics. Key responsibilities include managing internal and external communications, creating and distributing media releases, maintaining social media accounts, and supporting community events.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Ensure all parties are aware of community activities through effective internal communication.
  • Inform the broader community about Special Olympics programs and events.
  • Prepare a public relations strategy in conjunction with the Community Council.
  • Manage the community’s social media accounts and respond to public inquiries.
  • Create and distribute media releases and public service announcements for events, competitions, and fundraisers.
  • Coordinate the creation of a periodic newsletter to inform all stakeholders of community events.
  • Assist Head Coaches in preparing promotional materials for the start of sports seasons or special events.
  • Serve as a public relations resource for the community.
  • Attend all community meetings and report on PR activities.
  • Pass on all relevant files and information upon vacating the position.
  • Familiarize oneself with all relevant information and policies in the Resource Library.
  • Maintain the Special Olympics email address provided.

Annual Responsibilities:

  • Maintain consistent internal communication to keep all stakeholders informed.
  • Execute external communication efforts to engage the community with Special Olympics programs.
  • Develop and implement public relations strategies and campaigns.
  • Regularly update and monitor social media platforms.
  • Produce and distribute media releases, public service announcements, and newsletters.
  • Support the promotion of sports seasons and special events through various media channels.
  • Participate in community meetings and contribute to discussions and planning.
  • Recognize and celebrate key events and milestones within the community.
