Community Transition Coordinator

The Community Transition Coordinator is a crucial role within Special Olympics Ontario, aimed at bridging the gap between school programs and community programs for student-athletes aged 18 to 21. This position is vital for ensuring a smooth transition for athletes, facilitating their continued participation in sports, and fostering community engagement. The coordinator works closely with local schools, parents, and community clubs to create opportunities for student-athletes to integrate into community sports programs, ensuring they remain active and supported.

Main Responsibilities

  • Be a member of the community council and attend community council meetings.
  • Identify SOO student-athletes to target in local school boards.
  • Establish relationships with local school boards and schools.
  • Organize parent information nights/sessions in the schools.
  • Organize opportunities for student-athletes to attend community events and try community sport programs.
  • Collaborate with community coaches to find suitable clubs for new athletes.
  • Determine the need for new clubs based on school athlete participation and demand.
  • Communicate with the Provincial Office on developments, concerns, and issues related to transitioning athletes.
  • Assist in recruiting new volunteers by informing parents about volunteer opportunities.
  • Pass on all files to the new Transition Coordinator upon vacating the position.
  • Review and be familiar with relevant sections of the information portal.
  • Maintain the Special Olympics email address provided.

Annual Responsibilities

  • Meet with the Schools Programs Developer for training updates.
  • Prepare reports on transition results from each semester.
  • Consult with Community Councils to identify openings in clubs.
  • Review anticipated numbers of graduating student-athletes and set targets.
  • Update and distribute "What's Where" packages.
  • Participate in Parent Information Sessions.
  • Work on special projects and committees as required.
