COMMUNITY TRANSITION COORDINATOR POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

Purpose

 

An objective of Special Olympics Ontario is to ensure that the school athletes are aware of and becoming members of the SOO community programs. The Transition Coordinator will focus on “transitioning” student-athletes between the ages of 18 and 21 years old that are registered in SOO school programs into the community programs.

 

Qualifications

  • Excellent Communication Skills

  • A strong knowledge of the SOO community programs in their area

  • Strong leadership, organizational and administrative skills

  • Strong written and verbal skills

  • A relationship with the local schools and school board(s) would be an asset

  • Access to computer and e-mail required.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Be a member of the community council and attend community council meetings

  • Determine which SOO student-athletes to target in local school boards (this information can/will be provided by provincial office)

  • Establish relationships with local school boards and schools

  • Organize parent information nights/sessions in the schools (participate in existing parent-teacher nights)

  • Organize opportunities for student-athletes to attend community events

  • Organize opportunities for student-athletes to try community sport programs

  • Work with community coaches to determine which clubs would be suitable for new athletes

  • Determine where new clubs need to be started based on response from school athlete participation/need

  • Communicate with the Provincial Office on developments, concerns, and issues in relation to transiting graduating athletes into community programs.

  • Help in the recruitment of new volunteers, by informing the parents of the graduating athletes about volunteer positions available in the community

  • Upon vacating the position all files etc. must be passed on to the new Transition Coordinator.

  • Review and be familiar with sections 1,6,7,8,12,17 and 18 of the information portal.

  • Maintain Special Olympics e-mail address that is provided to you if applicable.

 

 

Time Requirement

  • Approximately 2-5 hours per week is the estimated time commitment

  • This position is consultative in nature. All correspondence can be done from home through the telephone or in writing. Access to the internet for email purposes is mandatory.

  • The Transition Coordinator is expected to attend community council meetings and provide council members with updates as required

 

Duration of Position

  • Two year term or as per Community By-laws

 

Accountability

  • To work in cooperation with the Community Council and with the membership.

  • To provide updates to the Provincial Office as required

 

Orientation and Training

  • Orientation and training is available through the outgoing Transition Coordinator and the School Programs Developer
