COMMUNITY COORDINATOR ROLE DESCRIPTION 

Purpose  

To coordinate the volunteers within the community, ensure that all policies and procedures are followed and ensure programs are delivered in accordance with the Provincial Special Olympics constitution, by-laws and guidelines. 

Qualifications  

  • Strong leadership, organizational and administrative skills 
  • Strong written and verbal skills 
  • Ability to coordinate and delegate tasks 
  • Knowledge of Special Olympics Ontario community would be an asset 
  • Computer and email access is strongly recommended 

  

Duties and Responsibilities  

  • Is a member of the community’s executive council for matters that require the executive’s attention and consideration  
  • Call and preside over all council and executive meetings 
  • Ensure that communication is maintained between the Community Council Members 
  • Ensure information is disseminated between community council members and amongst the community at large 
  • Ensure that all District Meetings are attended by a member of the community to ensure the community’s interests are represented 
  • Liaise with Community Treasurer to monitor the Community’s financial position 
  • Encourage recruitment of volunteers to act as executive members for vacated positions 
  • Ensure that all Community Council members are fulfilling their roles in accordance with their job descriptions 
  • Provide a link between the Provincial office and the community to ensure new policies are followed and communicated to the membership 
  • Keep the Provincial Office apprised of community activities 
  • Be knowledgeable of and understand the guidelines, policies and bylaws of Special Olympics Ontario 
  • Act as the point of contact, or designate a point of contact, for public inquiries regarding local programs 
  • Maintain Special Olympics e-mail address that is provided to you if applicable 
  • Review and be familiar with all sections of the Resource Library 
  • Work with Head Coaches, Provincial Staff and council to complete all endorsement and Games paperwork in a timely fashion during games years. 
  • Provide Provincial Staff Representative with community program and contact updates on a semi-annual basis or as changes are made. 
  • Ensure community elections are held as outlined in the Community Operating Guidelines 
  • Review Community Operating Guidelines on a yearly basis with community council and make any updates or changes that are necessary, with all changes being sent to your Provincial Staff Representative for approval. 
  • Orient the succeeding Community Coordinator before vacating the position 

  

Time Requirement 

  • Varies depending on ongoing community events. Approximately 4 to 6 hours per week average. 

Duration of Position 

  • Two-year term or as per Community By-laws 

Accountability 

  • To work in cooperation with the Community Council and with the membership 
  • To provide updates to the Provincial Office as required 

Orientation and Training 

  • Orientation and training are available through the outgoing Community Coordinator and/or Provincial Staff Representative.
