7000-207 SPORT: TOURNAMENT COMMITTEES AND CONDITIONS OF COMPETITION

Review Date: February 2021

Effective Date: February 2021

Due to geography and the high cost of transportation, most Special Olympics Ontario events are held in a tournament format, which would ordinarily involve three or more clubs gathering for a one day competition.  A Tournament can range from a local invitational to a Sport Conference Competition to a Provincial Games. At all levels the event shall have a Competition Host Committee that is in charge of all organizational requirements such as, but not limited to: registration, procurement of facilities, scheduling, volunteer recruitment and fundraising.

The Competition Host Committee must establish the conditions under which a competition is to be played and provide these conditions to all participants along with the tournament registration package.  The conditions should include matters such as method of entry, eligibility, length of the competition, etc., which are not directly dealt with in the SOO Official Rules. In submitting a tournament registration, the athlete/team acknowledges the conditions of the competition and must abide by them the day of the event.

Under no circumstances does the Competition Host Committee have the power to waive or alter any SOO Official Rule or Sport and Competition Policy without approval from the SOO Program Services Team.

For assistance with Conditions of Competition, the Competition Host Committee should reference the SOO Competition Host Resource Package for their sport. They should also be in regular contact with their Sport Convenor, Conference Convenor and SOO’s Competition Developer for assistance in running their tournament.

Non Sanctioned Competitions

Communities and/or Sport Clubs who choose to host competitions that are not sanctioned by SOO will do so at their own liability. SOO will not incur any debt and/or liability as a result of a non-sanctioned competition.

Athletes/ Sport Clubs who choose to attend competitions that are not sanctioned by SOO, SOC or SOI will do so at their own cost and their own liability.  SOO will not incur any debt and/or liability as a result of an Athlete or Sport Club choosing to attend a Non-Sanctioned Event.
