“That summer was the summer I realized what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.”
“I started coaching Special Olympics when I was 16 years old. I found the opportunity while working as a Special Education lunch supervisor while I was in high school. I remember being nervous at my first practice. I was hoping to make a good impression and inspire AT LEAST one person to do their best and crack some smiles along the way. That was the summer I realized what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
The individuals I met that summer changed my perspective forever on Special Education and individuals with various abilities. I will never forget how I felt leaving each practice, my face hurting from smiling so hard. I can't wait to see those smiling faces again and hopefully soon!
If my athletes are half as inspired and motivated by me as I am by them, I am satisified.” Sophy Campo, Track & Field Coach for Greater Durham Region.
