Celebrating the Life of Dr. Frank J. Hayden and Marion Hayden

The Special Olympics community lost a true founding figure on May 16, 2026. Dr. Frank Hayden passed away at the age of 96, leaving behind a legacy that has transformed countless lives. We are honouring his memory, and that of his late wife Marion, with a public Celebration of Life, and we warmly invite anyone who was touched by his work to join us.

A Legacy Built on Belief

Dr. Hayden's groundbreaking research as a faculty member at the University of Toronto in the early 1960s revealed that children with intellectual disabilities were half as physically fit as their peers. At the time, it was widely assumed that this was simply a consequence of their disability. Dr. Hayden challenged that mindset, proving through rigorous scientific study that given the opportunity, people with intellectual disabilities could acquire the skills to participate in sport and become physically fit.

That belief, that sport could be transformative, became the foundation of a global movement.

In 1965, Dr. Hayden received a call from the Kennedy Foundation. Eunice Kennedy Shriver, sister of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, was running summer camps for individuals with intellectual disabilities and took a keen interest in his research. Their collaboration led to the inaugural Special Olympics Games at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 20, 1968. With the support of Canadian broadcaster Harry “Red” Foster, the first Special Olympics Games in Canada followed in 1969. Today, the movement spans the globe.

As Dr. Hayden himself once said: “My idea wasn't to find the fastest runner with an intellectual disability. It was to make them fitter and healthier, so they have the opportunity to live their potential.”

Among the many honours Dr. Hayden received throughout his life, one of his most cherished came in 2013, when the Halton District School Board named Dr. Frank J. Hayden Secondary School in his honour. Known affectionately as Hayden High, the school became a second home to Dr. Hayden, and its students and staff became an extension of his family. It is fitting, then, that this is where we gather to celebrate his life.
