For 35 years, Marlene Mayer has been participating in a wide range of sports with Special Olympics Ontario, garnering praise for her skill in 10-pin bowling and floor hockey in particular. “My best memory is when I was playing goalie in floor hockey and had three shutouts.”
In 2022, Marlene’s strong athletic performance allowed her to meet Mayor Nina Bifolchi of Wasaga Beach. Mayor Bifolchi presented Marlene with a certificate in recognition of her gold-medal win in a Barrie 10-pin bowling competition, saying “congratulations Marlene and keep up the great work!”
Even with her achievements, Marlene has a more touching perspective on what Special Olympics has to offer. Especially since the pandemic, Marlene most looks forward to seeing her friends at each event and says “Special Olympics means I’m part of something; I’m not a nobody, I’m a somebody.”
