We are Roland Michener Secondary School, and we are the Rebels! Located in the northern mining town of South Porcupine, we're part of the city of Timmins, known as “The City with a Heart of Gold.” We've been honoured to represent our northern area in four separate school championships: Peterborough, Toronto, Kingston, Chatham, and hopefully many more to come!
Our sport has always been basketball, either as part of the Unified Program or Traditional. This year we hope to qualify for more sports if we can. Special Olympics has helped our athletes (and coaches) realize our athletic skills; through practice, teamwork, and always trying our best, we've come first in our basketball division twice! However, winning is just a small part of the success we associate with Special Olympics.
Regardless of intellectual or physical abilities, the games throughout the year and at Provincials offer us the chance to shine; to represent our school and city; to meet new friends; and a unique opportunity for many of us to see the big cities of southern Ontario. We welcome the 11-hour bus rides down south, picking up other schools and new friends along the way!
This year we're growing our events up north. We're planning to participate in or even host qualifiers for soccer (for the first time), basketball, floorball, and bocce. We thank all those at Special Olympics Ontario for their commitment in planning and supporting all of the events. We promise to always try our best and be brave in our attempts!
