What is Special Olympics?

Special Olympics Ontario is a sports organization dedicated to people with an intellectual disability; it provides athletes with far more than just the physical benefits of sport. Over the past 40 years Special Olympics has grown from a modest program serving local athletes, to becoming the world's largest movement dedicated to promoting respect, acceptance, inclusion and human dignity for people with intellectual disabilities through sport.

Eligibility

A person with an intellectual disability are eligible to participate in Special Olympics.
A person is considered to have an intellectual disability if that person satisfies the following requirements:

  • Typically an IQ score of approximately 70 or below

  • Deficits in general mental abilities which limit and restrict participation and performance in one or more aspects of daily life such as communication, social participation, functioning at school or work, or personal independence, and;

  • Onset during the developmental period (before the age of 18 years).

Competition

  • Local and Regional Competitions

    Open to all athletes within their own community

  • Provincial Games

    Held on a rotating basis over a four-year period.

  • National Games

    National Games are held every two (2) years on a rotating basis (summer & winter).

  • World Games

    Also held every two years on a rotating winter and summer basis.
