Dan Banks and Simone Hubers: Sport Aurora Recognizes SOO Volunteers

Sport Aurora’s 14th Annual Volunteer Recognition Event took place at Wicked Eats on October 27, 2024.  21 local sports organizations celebrated their Volunteers of the Year.  Dan Banks and Simone Hubers were recipients of the Volunteer of the Year awards for their volunteer efforts with Special Olympics Ontario – Aurora.

Dan's Statement—

“My volunteer experience with Special Olympics is more than just assisting at practices and events; it's about building relationships and fostering a sense of community. I have witnessed firsthand how athletes—many of whom are facing significant challenges in their everyday lives—find confidence, joy, and pride in their abilities while participating in Special Olympics activities. The past 10 years as a volunteer has been extremely rewarding and I look forward to continuing to build on the success of Special Olympics Aurora.”

Simone's Statement—

“In 2018, I started my journey of volunteering with SOO-Aurora as volunteer coordinator because I wanted to give back to an organization that makes a positive impact in the life of my daughter, Nell.  She thoroughly enjoys participating in bocce, 10-pin bowling, and rhythmic gymnastics. In 2023, I became an assistant bocce coach because I love teaching, encouraging and helping our athletes to have fun, learn new skills and succeed to the best of their abilities.

I am passionate about both of my roles with SOO-Aurora and I am a strong advocate for inclusion and acceptance.  It makes me feel happy being part of a team of volunteers who make a big difference in the lives of the athletes that we coach and support.  The joy, friendships, talents, and accomplishments that I experience with both athletes and volunteers mean the world to me.”
