Dianne Speed has been a volunteer with Special Olympics Ontario, Owen Sound for almost 25 years. In that time, Speed has and continues to provide a space for athletes to get involved, challenge their skills and most importantly, have fun.
“Coaching with Special Olympics gives athletes a space to participate and challenge their skills without being afraid. The athletes can always be themselves!”
Inspired by the athletes, Speed regularly challenges herself to be a better coach. There are no limitations to Special Olympics when coaching from age 4-100 which helps in keeping Speed on her toes and thinking outside of the box.
“Knowing that the athletes want to be better challenges me to be a better coach.”
While coach Speed is continually inspired by and learning from the athletes, she also takes the time to learn from fellow coaches. Each and every moment within Special Olympics presents an opportunity to learn from others and Speed takes in all she can to better herself as a coach. As an advocate for Special Olympics, Speed is passing the torch and encouraging others to get involved: “Come, coach and enjoy yourself!”
In honour of National Coaches Week, we send our gratitude and thanks to coach Dianne Speed. Thanks to YOU, Special Olympics athletes are able to achieve their goals in both competition and in life.
