Unified Champion Schools in Ontario

Celebrating Inclusion Through Sport, Leadership, and School Culture

Unified Champion Schools create environments where students with and without intellectual disabilities learn, play, lead, and belong together. These schools are recognized for building strong, inclusive communities where every student has meaningful opportunities to participate and succeed.

Below, you will find a full overview of the program, an explanation of the recognition levels, and a celebration of Ontario’s All-Province Unified Champion Schools.

Three Pillars of Unified Champion Schools

A Unified Champion School is a school that brings students of all abilities together through three key areas of activity.
The goal is to create a school community where every student feels welcome, valued, and able to participate.
Schools are recognized at different achievement levels based on how deeply these three pillars are embedded into school life.

Inclusive Sports & Health

A fully inclusive sports, fitness, and wellness program that combines an approximately equal number of students with and without intellectual disabilities, such as Special Olympics Unified Sports, Interscholastic Unified Sports, Unified PE, Unified Intramurals, or Unified Health and Wellness.
Youth Leadership

Students of all abilities take on leadership roles in their schools. This can include planning activities, supporting practices, coaching peers, mentoring younger students, speaking at assemblies, or helping run events. These opportunities help students build confidence, communication skills, and a stronger sense of belonging.

Whole School Engagement

Schools run activities that promote school-wide inclusion and celebrate all students. This can include pep rallies, assemblies, inclusion campaigns, intramurals, spirit events, fundraisers, or partnerships with community organizations. Whole school engagement helps create a school culture where everyone is valued.

    UCS Recognition Levels

The Unified Champion Schools recognition system has five levels.
Each level reflects a school’s involvement, depth of programming, and commitment to inclusive culture.

    UCS Base

Schools at the base level have taken meaningful first steps toward inclusion. They participate in Unified programming and offer at least one Unified sport or activity. Foundational schools are actively building structures that support long-term growth in leadership and whole school engagement.
