Request to Host 2024-25 School Competition

Please fill in the following form if you are interested in hosting an SOO event at your school. SOO will contact you by June 27th to inform you if your request to host was granted. Note: due to increasing participation Special Olympics will only be able to host competitions at schools with the capacity to support larger events.

  • Criteria - PLEASE READ

    1. You must register the event with Special Olympics Ontario, which are you doing right now with this form.
    2.The event’s date, time and location will be decided in collaboration with and must be approved by SOO’s School and Youth team prior to the event. Each specific sport has its own timeframe during the school year, after which all qualifying decisions are made.
    3. The event must be open to all schools, both Catholic and Public boards.
    4. For the event to go ahead there must be at least two other schools present at the event, with a minimum of three teams between them.
    5. You must update us on all teams’ roster changes, return all borrowed equipment in a timely fashion and submit accurate game scores using the template we will provide you with in a Final Report package.
    6. You must have the hosting capacity to support an event in your region. For basketball, bocce and floorball you must have a minimum of 3 gyms to be considered. For soccer you must have enough space to make 4 Special Olympics Sized Fields (60’ by 40')
    7. You must provide an adequate amount of volunteer 12-32 depending on the size of your events.
    8. You will be required to complete a short hosting training prior to hosting an event and volunteers will be asked to do so as well. One staff representative per school will need to complete the training once.
    9. Special Olympics Ontario will have discretion to make final decisions on events being staffed or unstaffed. Events where SOO representatives are present on site are considered staffed events and no grant funds will be given. Unstaffed events are where SOO handles all preparations ahead of the event but is not physically present. Unstaffed event hosts receive a $300-500 grant to support their special education programs as they see fit. New hosts will be required to have their first event staffed
    10. That you confirm facility access and ability to host with your school administration and physical education department before confirming an event date with SOO.

    Event sizes range from requiring 10-32 energetic and trained volunteer students.
    Can be Cafeteria, Spaces in the gym and so on.
    LETR (law enforcement) is one of our biggest partners and supporters and makes our events possible. The Law Enforcement Torch Run has evolved to now encompass most of our major events and communities. This is a great opportunity for schools to get involved in their and support the Special Olympics and another opportunity for our athletes to be recognized.
  • Note Special Olympics will have sole discretion on wether events will be staffed or unstaffed. Special Olympics Ontario is committed to ensuring qualify competition and community/school engagement. We will be have a staff member support at least one event in each community going forward. Staffed event hosts will have all registration fees waived in 2024-25. Staffed events are events where SOO staff are present to help facilitate and run the event. Approved unstaffed event hosts will receive a $300-500 hosting grant to be used toward anything related to their Special Education programs. Total grant amount based on event quality and participation. Unstaffed events are events where SOO still prepares an support all operations leading up to the event (communications, officials, registration, schedules, medical, LETR and so on). However, the event day itself is handled by the school. Note: All new hosts will be required to have their first event staffed.
  • Our events typically run from 9:30-1:30. Registration 9:30 - 10:00 Opening Ceremonies (10:00 - 10:15) Coaches Meeting (10:15-10:25 Games (10:30 - 1:30). With a lunch break at 11:45 - 12:15 were possible)
