SPECIAL OLYMPICS ONTARIO PRESENTS: THE MARCH MADNESS VIRTUAL BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

*Special Olympics Ontario will be hosting our first ever three-day March Madness Virtual Basketball Tournament on March 29th, 30th, 31st, and a Virtual Fun Day on April 1st. The Tournament will be a combination of asynchronous and synchronous gameplay as follows*

Each team will compete in three different team skill challenges over the course of three days  

  • There will also be a Live Virtual Fun and Awards Day on the 4thDay (April 1st
  • All divisions will have different competition criteria for the tournament
  1. Monday March 29th and Tuesday 30th events will be played asynchronously on your own time (results must be submitted to the SOO Schools email at end of day (5pm EST) for both days) 
  2. The Wednesday March 31st event will be held LIVE and synchronously  
  • Start times will be at 10:00 AM for Yellow Division (At Home Learners), 11:00 AM for Red Division (Level 1 Skills), 12:30 PM for Green Division (Level 2 Skills), and 1:30pm for Blue Division (Unified)

 

  • March 31st (Day 3 is team colour day, all athletes are encouraged to wear their favourite team’s colour or jersey
  1. Thursday April 1st (Fun Day) will be held Live on SOO’s School Programs Facebook Live from 10am-12pm

 

 

Equipment

  1. Basketball  (any version or alternate ball is acceptable)   
  2. Basketball net (any version, ex. garbage bin, hula-hoop or recycling bin is acceptable)  
    • Basketball nets with a height of 9-10 feet are preferred but lower heights are acceptable
    • Any width between 18-40 inches is acceptable (18-inch traditional basketball rim width is preferred
  3. Cones (any version is acceptable e.g., water bottles, shoes)  
  4. Scoring Chart (provided by SOO) (To Record Athlete Scores)
  5. Microsoft Teams or Google Meet Access
  6. Measuring tape  (to measure distances for tape markers)
  7. Tape (for shooting and distance markers)
  8. Timer (to time athlete competition length)
  9. Accessibility Adaptation: Athletes with difficulty using their hands or feet can use any assistive measures necessary and adapt competition criteria as needed 

 

 

 


Divisions

Note: Teams will be placed into Skill Level Divisions based on a quick survey filled out at registration. After registering, those teams will be placed into either the Level 1 Skills or Level 2 Skills divisions and be notified of their division classification directly by email after registration**

Please Note: All teams with limited gym and equipment access will compete against other schools within their division with similar accessibility challenges

*Please Note: For all Competitions At Home Learners will be put into teams of two, and those scores will be added together) (This will be the final score)

*Please note that for all three skill challenges teams in the unified division can choose whether to compete together in the same classroom or virtually in separate classrooms. The scores will be added together regardless*
