{"id":2887,"date":"2019-03-15T14:20:57","date_gmt":"2019-03-15T14:20:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www1.specialolympicsontario.com\/resources\/?p=2887"},"modified":"2025-11-24T10:29:07","modified_gmt":"2025-11-24T15:29:07","slug":"liability-accident-insurance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www1.specialolympicsontario.com\/resources\/liability-accident-insurance\/","title":{"rendered":"LIABILITY &#038; ACCIDENT INSURANCE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>LIABILITY &amp; ACCIDENT INSURANCE<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt;\">The following is an explanation of the insurance coverage for athletes and volunteers who are registered with Special Olympics Ontario\/Special Olympics Canada.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\">Special Olympics Ontario offers its volunteers and athletes a comprehensive insurance package that will adequately cover the situations with which they are faced in the organization. \u00a0There is always an inherent risk in everything that we do in life. If a volunteer or athlete feels that the coverage offered by our insurance company does not meet their needs, then they should be encouraged to take out their own additional personal insurance. \u00a0Clubs or Communities cannot use money raised in the name of Special Olympics to take out additional insurance coverage.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\"><strong>Liability Insurance<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\">Below is an outline of Special Olympics Canada&#8217;s insurance coverage that applies to all currently registered Special Olympics athletes and volunteers (note: any individuals under 18 years of age must have a parent\/guardian sign their registration form). \u00a0Any inquiries should be directed to:<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\"><strong>Special Olympics Ontario<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-size: 12pt;\">Protection against legal liabilities for injuries or death to third party persons and damage to property of others up to $10,000,000 limit of liability, which would include a $2500 deductible. \u00a0The policy provides both indemnifications of compensation and defence costs.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\">Volunteers driving their own vehicles in connection with their duties will be primarily protected by their own automobile insurance in regard to damage to their own vehicle or legal action from third parties. \u00a0\u00a0If the owner of the vehicle&#8217;s insurance is denied, or if the vehicle owner is sued for more than their insurance covers, SOO insurance would take effect.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>CERTIFICATES OF INSURANCE<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\"><strong>When do I need one?<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\">You&#8217;ll need a Certificate of Insurance when a person, organization, facility or venue (etc.) requests verification of Special Olympics insurance coverage. \u00a0It is common practice for the person or organization to define minimum coverage and limit requirements.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\"><strong>What does a Certificate of Insurance show?<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\">The coverage and limits requested the insurance carrier, and policy effective dates. \u00a0It may also specify relevant information (e.g. date, place, and additional insured) regarding an event.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\">It will also show:<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt;\">The Insured: Special Olympics Canada, Inc.<br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt;\">The Certificate Holder: the person or organization requesting the Certificate of Insurance.<br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\"><strong>What if the person or organization wants to be an &#8220;additional insured&#8221;?<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\">This &#8220;status&#8221; will be requested by the prospective Certificate Holder. \u00a0You must indicate this request on the Request for Certificate of Insurance form. \u00a0You must also explain the role the prospective &#8220;additional insured&#8221; will play in your event. \u00a0Contact the provincial office for an application to request a certificate of insurance.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\"><strong>Will I have to pay anything for doing this?<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\">In most cases, no. \u00a0If the event you are holding has some very unusual circumstances, a fee may apply. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\"><strong>What if a facility (venue, event sponsor, coordinator, etc.) we are using (in-kind) for our event asks us to sign a contract or agreement?<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\">Always have your contracts and\/or agreements regarding risk insurance reviewed by the Provincial office&#8217;s Manager, Finance before signing. \u00a0Contracts and agreements often include wording which transfers liability.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\"><strong>What is a Certificate of Insurance?<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\">The certificate of insurance is a one-page document which provides evidence that insurance coverage exists. \u00a0It identifies the insured person or organization. The certificate outlines the extent and limits of coverage but does not modify or extend any coverage. \u00a0It merely reports what exists.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\">The Special Olympics certificate outlines the coverage and limits of insurance provided to the Special Olympics organization, the insurer providing the coverage, and the effective and expiration dates of the policy. \u00a0In addition, the certificate specifies the covered event and the dates of coverage for that event. The certificate holder is the person or organization named in the certificate, known as the &#8220;holder&#8221; of that certificate. \u00a0That person or organization has no more or less coverage as a result of being a certificate holder than otherwise. It does, however, provide the proof required that insurance does exist which is the comfort level desired by most interested parties. \u00a0If you have entered into any agreement, contact, or permit containing an insurance clause, assumption of liability, indemnification or hold harmless language, please forward a copy of the agreement with your Special Olympics Request for Certificate of Insurance form to the Provincial office Manager, Finance. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\"><strong>How do I get a Certificate of Insurance?<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\">A certificate should only be requested when it is required by a facility or organization. To request a certificate, please complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.specialolympicsontario.com\/support\/soo-insurance-requisition\/\">Special Olympics Request for Certificate of Insurance form<\/a>. \u00a0This request form must include the following information to issue the appropriate certificate:<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\"><strong>Special Olympics Area Data:<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt;\">Includes name, address, phone\/fax numbers of person completing the request form.<br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\"><strong>Event Data:<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt;\">Includes name, date, location, and brief description of event, especially an indication that Special Olympics is conducting the event.<br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\"><strong>Certificate Holder:<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt;\">Entity requesting certificate of insurance include name, address, phone\/fax numbers of certificate holder.<br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\"><strong>Additional Insured:<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt;\">This is needed only if the certificate holder requires additional insured status. Also, requests a copy of any agreement or contract which assumes liability or contains indemnification wording.<br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>AUTOMOBILE INSURANCE<br \/><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\"><strong>Non-owned &amp;<\/strong><br \/><strong>Hired automobile coverage<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\"><strong>Frequently asked questions:<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\"><strong>When does this apply to me?<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\">When you are using your own vehicle, or renting a vehicle for Special Olympics purposes.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\"><strong>What coverage is provided? <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Non-owned automobile \u2013 protects Special Olympics from 3<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 7pt;\"><sup>rd<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> party liability claims resulting from coaches, athletes and volunteers using their own vehicles for Special Olympics purposes. The limit of coverage is $5,000,000.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hired automobiles \u2013 protects Special Olympics from 3<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 7pt;\"><sup>rd<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> party liability claims as above, and also for the legal liability for physical damage to the hired automobiles subject to a limit of $50,000 and a $2500 deductible. This coverage applies to &#8220;Private Passenger Type Vehicles&#8221;, ie-Cars, small vans, it does not include-RV&#8217;s, Buses, large bus-type vans, trucks etc. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\"><strong>Is my personal insurance affected?<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Arial;\">Yes.
