{"id":2873,"date":"2019-03-15T14:06:46","date_gmt":"2019-03-15T14:06:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www1.specialolympicsontario.com\/resources\/?p=2873"},"modified":"2021-12-07T14:15:58","modified_gmt":"2021-12-07T19:15:58","slug":"harassment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www1.specialolympicsontario.com\/resources\/harassment\/","title":{"rendered":"HARASSMENT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"color:black; font-family:Arial; text-decoration:underline\"><strong>HARASSMENT <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"color:black; font-family:Arial\">All members of the organization including volunteers, coaches, athletes, officials, staff and members of the board are to refrain from any behaviour that constitutes <strong>harassment<\/strong>, where harassment is defined as comment or conduct directed towards an individual or group, which is offensive, abusive, racist, sexist, degrading, or malicious. <\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"color:black; font-family:Arial\">Types of behaviour that constitute harassment include, but are not limited to:<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-left: 108pt\">\n<li><span style=\"color:black\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman; font-size:7pt\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Written or verbal abuse, threats, or outbursts<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">The display of visual material which is offensive or which a reasonable person ought to know is offensive in the circumstances<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Unwelcome remarks, jokes, comments, innuendo, or taunts<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman; font-size:7pt\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Leering or other suggestive or obscene gestures<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Condescending or patronizing behaviour which is intended to undermine self-esteem, diminish performance or adversely affect working conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman; font-size:7pt\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Practical jokes which cause awkwardness or embarrassment, endanger a person&#8217;s safety, or negatively affect performance<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Any form of hazing where hazing is defined as any potentially humiliating, degrading, abusive, or dangerous activity expected of a junior-ranking athlete by a more senior teammate, which does not contribute to either athlete&#8217;s positive development, but is required to be accepted as part of a team, regardless of the junior-ranking athlete&#8217;s willingness to participate. This includes, but is not limited to, any activity, no matter how traditional or seemingly benign, that sets apart or alienates any teammate based on class, number of years on the team, or athletic ability.<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Retaliation or threats of retaliation against an individual who reports harassment to Special Olympics Canada<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman; font-size:7pt\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Bullying<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Offensive or intimidating phone calls or emails<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman; font-size:7pt\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Displaying or circulating offensive pictures, photographs or materials in printed or electronic form<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Psychological abuse<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Discrimination<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Words or actions which are known or should reasonably be known to be offensive, embarrassing, humiliating, demeaning or intimidating<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman; font-size:7pt\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Behaviours such as those described above that are not directed towards a specific individual or group but have the same effect of creating a negative or hostile environment<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"color:black; font-family:Arial\">Refrain from any behaviour that constitutes <strong>violence<\/strong>, where violence is defined as the exercise of physical force, that causes or could cause physical injury; an attempt to exercise physical force that could cause physical injury; or a statement or behaviour that it is reasonable to interpret as a threat to exercise physical force. <\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"color:black; font-family:Arial\">Types of behaviour that are applicable to this section include, but are not limited to:<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-left: 108pt\">\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Verbal threats to attack<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Sending to or leaving threatening notes or emails<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Making threatening physical gestures<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Wielding a weapon<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Hitting, pinching or unwanted touching which is not accidental<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Throwing an object Blocking normal movement or physical interference, with or without the use of equipment<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Any attempt to engage in the type of conduct outlined above<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"color:black; font-family:Arial\">Refrain from any behaviour that constitutes <strong>sexual harassment<\/strong>, where sexual harassment is defined as unwelcome sexual comments and sexual advances, requests for sexual favours, or conduct of a sexual nature. <\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"color:black; font-family:Arial\">Types of behaviour that constitute sexual harassment include, but are not limited to:<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-left: 108pt\">\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Sexist jokes<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Sexual violence<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Display of sexually offensive material<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Sexually degrading words used to describe a person<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Inquiries or comments about a person&#8217;s sex life<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Unwelcome sexual flirtations, advances, or propositions<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Inappropriate sexual touching, advances, suggestions or requests<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Unwanted physical contact including, but not limited to, touching, petting, pinching, or kissing<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Unwelcome sexual flirtations, advances, requests, or invitations<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black; font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial\">Physical or sexual assault<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"color:black; font-family:Arial\">Any member of the organization who violates any of the above conditions will be subject to an immediate suspension as outlined in the SOO Disciplinary Procedure.<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"color:black;
