Special Olympics Ontario is dedicated to enriching the lives of Ontarians with intellectual disabilities through sport. Our vision is to open hearts and minds towards people with disabilities to create inclusive environments across Ontario, now including summer camps.
SOO’s Unified Camp Partnership Program seeks to:
Provide opportunities for meaningful participation in the unique camp environment!
Help SOO campers make new friends, learn new skills, participate in sports as well as other traditional camp activities.
Facilitate leadership experiences that will influence the lives of young people with and without intellectual disabilities.
How it Works
SOO has identified partner camps who support a unified philosophy of participation. Supporting a meaningfully inclusive (unified) environment presents a unique opportunity to bring young campers with intellectual disabilities into more mainstream summer recreation. According to SOO and all our partner camps, a camper is a camper is a camper.
Special Olympics Ontario representatives personally provide training to camp staff providing comprehensive training on how to adapt communications, activities, routines, and/or daily activities to ensure all campers are included and supported. Each camp commits to working with SOO as well as the camper’s family to ensure holistic and, where necessary, personalized care is provided.
Special Olympics Ontario accepts and reviews all applications and works collaboratively with each camp to match campers needs and interests to their programs. Placements are largely based on availability.
