Athlete Ambassador
Gage Mechefske | London, Ontario
Special Olympics has fostered 14-year-old Gage’s love for staying active, building his confidence on and off the field. Introduced to the program at age four through the Down syndrome community, the London, Ontario athlete is now a passionate bowler who also plays basketball and shares healthy cooking videos. For his parents, the impact goes far beyond the scoreboard: “His personal best is seeing that it is important and kind to cheer on teammates.” Supported by dedicated volunteers, Gage’s journey embodies this year’s Empire campaign, proving that every accomplishment is valuable and everyone deserves a place to belong.

Employee Athlete Ambassador
Bill Smith | Cambridge, Ontario
For nearly 40 years, Special Olympics has provided Cambridge, Ontario athlete Bill Smith with a profound sense of growth and belonging. Joining the movement in 1985, Bill has since competed in swimming, basketball, and 10-pin bowling, even capturing a gold medal at the 2015 World Games. This athletic confidence seamlessly transferred to his career at Sobeys, where he has been a valued teammate for 33 years. For Bill, who embodies this year’s Empire campaign, success is measured by community rather than medals: “Just like at Special Olympics, at Sobeys I feel like I’m part of the team. My best is about doing better than I did before, and being proud of who I’ve become.”

Sobeys Campaign Frequently Asked Questions

Special Olympics Ontario is dedicated to enriching the lives of Ontarians with an intellectual disability through sport.

For over 50 years, Special Olympics has grown from a modest program serving local athletes to become the world's largest movement dedicated to promoting respect, acceptance, inclusion, and human dignity for people with intellectual disabilities through sport. Special Olympics Ontario has optimized the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle through sport to improve the well-being of individuals with an intellectual disability. We continue to improve and expand the quality, opportunity and accessibility of sport to individuals with an intellectual disability. Along with this, we strive to improve upon both the awareness and support of the community in regards to Special Olympics Ontario and those involved with us. As an organization, we work to ensure our volunteers are strongly committed to acting locally while thinking globally. Through these steps, we hope to continue to build upon the past success of the organization.
